Yoga Helps Older Adults
As we age, our bodies change. The older we get, the farther away from optimal functioning we move. Things that we used to do with ease can become more difficult and things that we could rebound from quickly have more lasting effects. But, for those who practice Hatha yoga, this shift can happen differently. Though the voice of our body still changes as we age, the practice of yoga allows us to continue the conversation of mobility and activity with less fear and an increased quality of life. Now, this knowledge that yoga practitioners have touted for ages is being validated by western medical science in a recent study at Indiana University. |

If you have ever participated in any type of marathon, you know about the commitment that it takes. Training your body and mind, changing your lifestyle, managing your time, and ultimately the commitment of finishing what you started. Not always the most compassionate approach to commitment. Now, the traditional marathon has a new approach. On Saturdays in February and March you can participate in a virtual Compassion Marathon in hopes of cultivating a more compassionate mind and a more compassionate world. |

Yoga with the Whales
There is something to be said for the space in which we practice. Different spaces yield different experiences. We’ve all noticed the difference between an asana class in a loud gym and a class at a quite studio. We feel differently when we practice outside than we do when we are inside. So how about when you practice in a completely different space, say the Beluga whale exhibit at the Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta? |

Pose of the Month: Ustrasana
Ustrasana (Camel pose) is a very beneficial pose because it brings us out of our daily habitual posture of rounding the back and hunching over and brings us into a posture of opening the front body as well as elongating the spine. For this reason, it can be a very difficult posture, and it is a challenge to do without overarching in the low back, which causes compression and pain in the lower spine. |

Yoga Shanti Studio Not Practicing Peace
This morning, as I was sitting at my kitchen table contemplating the complexities of this path we call yoga, my Yogi Tea tag echoed my internal dialogue, “we are spiritual beings having a human experience.” This truth reminds us that we are not perfect, and our lives will not always be effortless, but we can work hard to remember the beauty and potential that thrives within us in each moment. On occasion, this paradox of human imperfection surfaces in a big way in the yoga world, as it has done recently in the split of business partners and fellow yoga teachers Colleen Saidman and Jessica Bellofatto and the North Hampton yoga studio, Yoga Shanti. |
