Chant Musicians Unite Behind Stay Strong Project | |||
|
Some of the biggest names in the chant and yoga community are uniting behind a new nonprofit venture, the Stay Strong Project, created by chant artist singer-songwriter, David Newman and his wife, Mira. The venture is a commingling of voices and instruments in a song and video set to be released February 2011.
“This past summer was a hard time for people, the oil spill the economy and you know I travel…I noticed a heaviness in people, even yoga people,” Newman said. “The song and the melody came to me in my sleep. So I wrote the song “Stay Strong” which was ultimately in answer to the fear and hopelessness I was seeing.” One-hundred percent of the proceeds of the Stay Strong Project go to Gulf Coast recovery and other environmental concerns in partnership with Global Green, USA – a charity that is, according to their mission statement, working to address some of the greatest challenges facing humanity. “In the United States our work is primarily focused on fighting global climate change through our green affordable housing initiatives, National Green Schools Initiative, national and regional green building policies, advocacy and education.” Newman’s own take is that this is truly a seva project – seva meaning selfless service for altruistic purposes on behalf of and for the betterment of community. “Bhaktifest (yoga and music festival) is where it all happened,” he said. “Everything we put out there was just completely supported from the very beginning and everyone wanted to be a part of it…Krishna Das, Donna De Lory, WAH!, Sean Johnson, Jai Uttal, C.C. White, Sharon Gannon and so many more. These are all people who are devotees and musicians and they are bridging the gap to fill a need.” The vision of The Stay Strong Project is to create a Global message that shows the community coming together through music, song, and prayer, to unite and uplift people and strengthen their ability to help in times of need. The song and video, distributed by Nutone Records, will be available for digital download Feb 8th and a Stay Strong Pre-Release Kirtan Celebration is scheduled in NYC at Yogamaya Yoga Studio on February 4th.
