Pranayama
Pranayama are breathing exercises developed by the ancient yogis for purification. Prana translates into "life force energy" and Yama translates into "control or mastery of". Thus, Pranyama is used to control, cultivate, and modify the Prana in the body. Prana is taken in through the air we breathe, and since the Pranayama exercises increase the amount of air we take in, they also increase our intake of Prana.

For all Pranayama (except Kapalabhati), the breath is slow and steady, breathed in and out of the nose and down into the belly. Always sit with a straight spine and a relaxed body. While you are practicing Pranayama, let go of any thoughts by focusing on the breathing involved with the Pranayama.

Can Meditation Alter your Genes?
As a result of the Human Genome project, scientists have discovered that genes express themselves differently in meditators and non-meditators based on the research of the Falun Gong meditation practitioners in China.

Falun Gong or Falun Dafa was introduced to the Chinese people in 1992 by Li Hongzhi.  According to the website for the practice, the technique has ancient roots and was passed down through a teacher/disciple lineage for generations.  The techniques themselves are fivefold consisting of movements and meditation.  Practitioners are said to uncover the deepest “and most profound truths of the universe” with consistent practice over time.

Are Yogis Getting Drunk Off of Kombucha?
Kombucha is a popular beverage for thousands of yogis and recently the drink has been removed from the shelves of many (but not all) stores due to elevated alcohol content.  The legal level for products not containing a warning label is 0.5%, and according to Whole Foods Market who was the first retailer to test the products, the levels is measuring up to 0.7% on the shelf.

Can Commercialized Yoga be Authentic?
John Friend is not stranger to the spotlight.  The founder and force behind Anusara yoga has been drawing crowds all across the globe as he teaches and promotes his own style of yoga.  In an article in New York Times Magazine last week, his unique approach was brought to task, and he and his community have responded in kind. The article has sparked the question in the yoga world: Can commercialized yoga be authentic?

Inspiring the Yogis of the Future
As the latest generation of committed yoga practitioners look toward the future of the practice, many are observing the efficacy of introducing yoga as a tool to manage health, emotion, and daily stress, and are feeling compelled to offer these tools to a younger generation.  The youth of today are dealing with levels of stress and dis-ease that are comparable to that of adults, and just as destructive.  To address this trend, many yogis are finding ways to offer the gifts of yoga to the younger generation.

The newest campaign of the Yoga Health Foundation, coordinators of Yoga Month September, is called Yoga-Recess in Schools.  The initiative is aimed at bringing yoga based health education into the classroom in hopes of impacting the growing trend of childhood obesity.

Naked Yoga Ads Stir Controversy
I like to think I’m somewhat on top of the different types of accessories and props needed in yoga. I am a yoga teacher, after all. But somehow, I missed out on ToeSox, until recently. It seems that the ToeSox company along with their yoga model Kathryn Budig are right in the middle of a heated debate over the placement of controversial ads in the September issue of Yoga Journal.  The ads have grabbed a lot of attention and have shocked some yogis right out of their socks.

India Moves to Protect Yoga
Come up with an original yoga catch-phrase or what you consider a new style of yoga? Thinking you might copyright or trademark your very own yoga-ism? The Indian government might have something to say about it. In fact, India’s Traditional Knowledge Digital Library, a government agency, has gone to extraordinary lengths to protect what they call “knowledge that should be available to everyone.”

Everyone Wants to Eat, Pray, Love
“Eat, Pray, Love,” Elizabeth Gilbert’s bestselling book turned movie, is more than just a blockbuster hit. It’s become a stylish and trendy mega event especially amongst the 40-something crowd, spawning a jewelry line, a line of perfumes, a limited edition tea and an entire collection from fashion designer, Sue Wong. Wow…so what is it, exactly, about this particular story that inspired such a response?

Can Christians Practice Yoga?
Controversy seems to be a constant companion to Dr. Albert Mohler, Jr, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Semininary, these days. Dr. Mohler is under fire from yoga practitioners, teachers, Christians, non-Christians and the main stream media for his statement in last month’s online blog post where he said, “When Christians practice yoga, they must either deny the reality of what yoga represents or fail to see the contradictions between their Christian commitments and their embrace of yoga.”

Just Say No to Yoga Mats?
Ever been impinged by your yoga mat? Maybe during yoga class you moved from a high lunge to a standing forward fold and your foot placement wasn’t exact causing the mat to bunch up underneath. Or, worse still, your mat smells funky from that hot class you took a few days ago and you get an odorous whiff every time you inhale into upward facing dog. A small but passionate set of yoga practitioners have just the solution. They say, “No more!” to yoga mats and are tossing them aside.

Diver Uses Yoga to Break World Record
Who knew yoga would be instrumental in breaking a world record for free-diving? William Trubridge did. “A lot of my techniques are taken from yoga practice,” the thirty-year-old, free diver said. “It’s the same as driving or washing the dishes, it becomes part of your muscle memory, your subconscious. It means more efficient movements and with your brain out of action it uses less oxygen.”
