Essential oils are powerful and time-honored tools that have been used to soothe and relax the mind and help heal many common ailments. However, it’s not often discussed how these fragrant plant and flower distillations can uplift and energize the body and mind as well. We often arrive at yoga or meditation feeling stressed, exhausted, overwhelmed, and distracted by our to-do lists. Tips for Using Essential Oil Blends
Assess your needs
Before you begin using essential oils, assess what you need from them. Are you looking for relaxation or energy? Uplifting or grounding? Here’s a fun quiz to help you choose the right oils for you and your practice: What Essential Oil Will Enhance Your Yoga Practice?
Educate yourself
Essential oils have so many benefits, but remember that they can be dangerous if used incorrectly. Be sure you’re educated on the proper use of essential oils in your yoga practice. If you have sensitive skin, dilute full-strength blends with coconut oil before applying.
Be courteous
Remember that a little essential oil goes a long way. Be mindful of how much you apply before showing up to the yoga studio! Overwhelming scents can be distracting to other students and may cause issues for those with allergies.
Timing is everything
The seven blends of energizing essential oils we’ve shared here are stimulating, so we do not recommend applying them less than two hours before going to bed. Likewise, it is not recommended to use calming and relaxing blends when you need to be alert.
