Krishnamacharya: His Life and Teachings |

No one has had more of an impact on how yoga is taught and practiced in the West than the late T. Krishnamacharya, yet many yogis do not know his name. His students included some of today’s most influential teachers: B.K.S. Iyengar, T. K. V. Desikachar, the late K. Pattabhi Jois, and the late Indra Devi. One of his longtime students, A. G. Mohan, has written this biography and memoir from Mohan’s collection of over 5000 pages of notes and numerous audio recordings of his personal training with Krishnamacharya.
The early life of Krishnamacharya is scarce due to his reluctance to talk about himself and his studies, but the beginning chapter does a good job of piecing multiple sources together to create a clear and simple overview of his life and training. The remainder of the book is more of a memoir documenting Mohan’s meeting and studying with Krishnamacharya, as well as a summery of his core teachings. The memoir spans from 1971 when Mohan first met Krishnamacharya, to his death in 1989, and reveals many personal stories that show the compassion and wisdom of Krishnamacharya and the dedication and devotion of Mohan. This book is a fascinating work on the life and teachings of the father of modern yoga, who unfortunately passed away just prior to yoga becoming hugely popular in the West. This book is a great addition to the growing number of books documenting the history of modern yoga, and is a must read for the serious yoga practitioner. In truth, it matters les what we do in practice than how we do it and why we do it. The same posture, the same sequence, the same meditation with a different intention takes on an entirely new meaning and will have entirely different outcomes. Donna Farhi |
