Yoga as Medicine |

While several books have been written on the subject of yoga therapy, this is the first that attempts to explain how and why yoga works as a therapeutic tool to heal disease. Western-trained internist and medical editor of Yoga Journal, Timothy McCall M.D., provides an excellent overview of the use of yoga as medicine and the practice of yoga in the first 2 parts of this in-depth book. The book’s third part, Yoga Therapy in Action, contains the most important content to the reader, with twenty chapters devoted to a large array of common medical conditions.
Dr. McCall, with case studies and hands-on knowledge provided by leading yoga therapists, offers a brief summary of each condition, discusses the scientific evidence of yoga therapy studies on the treatment of the condition, and concludes with a prescription of yoga poses and other yogic exercises.Yoga as Medicine also features an appendix on avoiding injury, details on anatomy, a plan for starting your home yoga practice, meditation techniques, and a sanskrit glossary. The only downside to this outstanding work on yoga therapy is that there are no footnotes or references for any of the medical studies described. "The only downside to this outstanding work on yoga therapy is that there are no footnotes or references for any of the medical studies described." Actually, more than 20 pages of references (more than 100 studies cited) in the appendix "Notes."

Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; for it becomes your destiny. Upanishads |
