My question is, can you practice Yoga when you have become pregnant? Is this a good time to begin, or should I wait until after?

Hi Joanne, Starting a yoga practice when you are pregnant isn't the absolute best time, but I would recommend you start now rather than wait until after the birth as the yoga will be a huge benefit and help you through your labor. Hi Joanne,
There are also classes geared specifically to prenatal women. These classes use yoga as a support for your changing body, and eventually to help prepare you for the labor process. Prenatal yoga is a very gentle approach that addresses many of the changes and discomforts that you can experience during pregnancy. The approach of prenatal yoga, and the knowledge of a certified prenatal yoga instructor should make it safe to begin at any time during your pregnancy, but as with any practice, always honor your body and especially now, don't push beyond your comfort level.

As a prenatal yoga teacher, I believe that prenatal yoga is very good for you. It helps you to stretch, tone, and 'feel your body'. It helps you to 'find your breath' with improved posture, i.e. sitting nice and tall on a zafu or folded blanket with a straight spine, provides optimum breathing for you and the baby. Another important aspect is that it gets you out of the house and doing something. You are around other moms-to-be and a communtiy is developed where you can get and receive the support that you need during this time. Of course your prenatal teacher should always advise that you don't do or hold a pose if it doesn't feel right for you.
