Re:lotus pose
Do not do any yoga pose if it hurts! Lotus is an advanced pose that requires a ton of hip flexibility to do safely. You can seriously damage your knees if you force your body into this pose before you are ready.
Namaste,

how do you develop the flexibility to do this pose?

Re:lotus pose
Slow and stead work on other hip opening poses will prepare you for full lotus pose. http://www.yogabasics.com/hip-opening-poses.html

And then you would first work with half lotus and slowly work towards full lotus.

Re:lotus pose
That's true. It's so essential that the hips open up so that you take pressure away from the knees and ankles.

We actually have a great 30-minute class for the lower body that is a great way to open up the hips. Have a look!

Yogic Wisdom
In truth, it matters les what we do in practice than how we do it and why we do it. The same posture, the same sequence, the same meditation with a different intention takes on an entirely new meaning and will have entirely different outcomes.

Ahimsa, the yogic practice of non violence must be adhered to when engaging in the practice of hatha yoga. Respect your body's limitations and inner wisdom, if something feels wrong or dangerous, please do not do it.
