lukeis,
I would not recommend practicing something like this unless you have experience with kumbhaka / breath retention or have access to an experienced teacher who can guide you.
The teacher doesn't have very sound anatomical / physiological theory (i.e. you can't force oxygen into the bloodstream by over-inflating the lungs) so I'd take what he was instructing with a grain of salt.
What is your motivation / intention for practicing a technique like this?

Yogic Wisdom |
When the breath wanders the mind also is unsteady. But when the breath is calmed the mind too will be still, and the yogi achieves long life. Therefore, one should learn to control the breath.
Hatha Yoga Pradipika |
Ahimsa, the yogic practice of non violence must be adhered to when engaging in the practice of hatha yoga. Respect your body's limitations and inner wisdom, if something feels wrong or dangerous, please do not do it.
Please consult your health care practitioner before starting a yoga, pranayama or other exercise program.
