Yoga floors
I have been teaching Yoga for 7 years and am currently changing my location to another studio. Do you feel that Yoga can be practiced on all types of flooring?I prefer the hard floor but the new location has a matted floor which makes it difficult to balance but it is better on the knees!Does a softer floor pose any type of injury threat to our students??

Re:Yoga floors
Hi Lisa,

Yoga can indeed be practiced on most flooring. I'm not aware of any issues with padded floors increasing injuries, but you may want to check in with the Kripalu Yoga center as the majority of their yoga rooms have carpeted floors. I'm also not clear on what type of flooring you are referring to as "matted". Is this carpet or some type of other flooring?
Namaste,
Timothy

Re:Yoga floors
Hello Lisa!
I'm a very novice yogi, but a rather more experienced architect. I (like Timothy) am curious about what the 'matting' is in the new studio. Also, what is the substrate beneath the matting? E.G, is it a wood structure building with carpet, or is it a concrete slab that someone put padding on?
Good luck with the move!

Re:Yoga floors
I also wonder this. Whenever I practice at home, I am wondering if the carpet would be better or the hard floor?

Re:Yoga floors
The surface you practice on depends on what type of practice you want to do, and how much padding you want under you. For an active ashtanga/power yoga type of practice a hardwood floor is best, for a gentle yoga practice a more padded floor will be better.

Timothy
