When I teach I don't use mirroring as I want the students to be fully aware during the practice. When I have tried mirroring before a lot of students just got confused because I was doing the ooposite to what I was instructing them to do. New students might have trouble at first. With repetition and consistency they will figure it out and adjust. If they don't know right from left and the connection to their body, I think its a good mental exercise for them to re-learn.
If you are demonstrating a new asana or sequence then I find it best to make eye contact with everyone and proceed slowly.

dolphin - you may want to try telling them you are mirroring them so they know. I have taught a few classes where they didn't get that I was mirroring them but once I explained what I was doing they were fine.
