"popping" spine, muscle soreness
"popping" spine, muscle soreness
Hi, and thanks for a great yoga site.

I am relatively new to yoga, I have taken classes at a local gym but never find the time to go regularly, so began using your audio files in Jan in order to practice on a more regular basis.

Two questions:

1. I sometimes feel a popping in my spine during twists, or almost always when I do Triangle to the left in your "fundamental poses" sequence. It does not hurt at all, but I feel distinct little pops, almost like cracking knuckles, especially when I really work to have good allignment with my hips (i.e if I let my bum poke out, no popping). I do practice in front of mirrors and think my alignment is correct. Is this normal? My back does not hurt at any time during/after practice.

2. My range of motion in the hips has gotten much better, even after only 2 months - I can really feel my flexibility increasing in day to day activities and think it has already improved my horseback riding (my main source of enjoyment!). However, after practice, I do feel muscle soreness in my hips, similar to what I would feel if I did a workout with weights (lunges/squats). I am figuring that this is probably normal since the poses ARE similar to lunges and squats in some cases, but just wanted to check. I don't feel pain during the practice, on the contrary I really enjoy the feeling of stretch, but sometimes I am walking a little funny AFTER... should I back off?

Last comment - please add more MP3 tracks! I have downloaded other things from competitve sites, but I still like your voice and rhythm the best.

Thanks
Stephanie

Re:"popping" spine, muscle soreness
Hi Stephanie,

The popping is normal and so is the soreness. You are basically getting a free chiropractic adjustment in your twists! So as long as it feels good, it will be healthy to continue to have your spine adjusted through the yoga, popping it back into a better alignment. The soreness can definitely be moderated by the amount of effort and intensity that you put into the practice, but if it feels good then continue doing what you are doing.

I'm almost finished transferring over the old premium content to this new site, and then I will have time to create some new sequences as well as record more of them.

I'm glad to hear you are enjoying the site. Thank you for your comments and feedback.
Namaste,
Timothy
