Knowing Limits
Hi there,
So I am completely new to this message board. I am actually new to yoga in general. I have had an interest for a while but I have never really made the comment to fully investigate what it can do for me. The reason being my limited flexibility. I am not unfit, but I am certainly not flexible. I started to lose my flexibility at a very early age. I haven't been able to sit with my legs crossed since i was about 11 or 12. It was the same deal with my father. Strong, just not flexible. This has left me using a very limited exercise routine (running, push-ups, sit-ups, common stretches). It does the trick but it doesn't seem nearly as fulfilling as Yoga could be. So my question is, where does someone with limited flexibility start Yoga? I have always been intimidated by Yoga classes because of limits. Is this all the more reason to go to an instructor or can I start off on my own?

Good karma to anyone who replies.
Thanks!

Re:Knowing Limits
I'd highly recommend finding a kind and compassionate yoga instructor who teaches a beginner level class. A good teacher will be able to help you with poses that may be problematic with your limited level of flexibility. Whatever you decide you want to be gentle with yourself and never push past your edge. Doing a little each day will have a greater effect than just one long class once per week.

I was very inflexible when I started yoga and with lots of time and effort I have been able to do things I never ever though I could. Being inflexible is all the more reason to start practicing yoga.

You may want to check out the beginners guide and the beginning level yoga poses on this site. From there use one of the basic sequences, many of them are short enough to use on a daily basis.
Namaste,
Timothy
