Maha Moha the Great Delusion
Funky, upbeat and fun, this chanting CD is a fusion of rock/pop grooves with world instruments and ancient mantras. The most impressive element of this recording is Morissette’s blending of the sanskrit mantras with his English lyrics. This technique can easily come off as cheesy and distracting, yet Morissette’s English translated lyrics give the compositions additional depth, appeal and meaning.

This fun and sweet DVD has two separate 20-minute programs that are suitable for beginning level students. Hemalayaa is a beautiful and lighthearted instructor who creates a harmonious mix of detailed instruction and encouragement to explore and create freedom in the yoga poses. The first yoga program is relaxing and heart opening and the second program is similar, but it is more engaging and core strengthening. Both yoga programs cover basic poses that incorporate many fluid and circular movements, and both programs end with a supine bound angle pose for relaxation.

Sitar Secrets by Al Gromer Khan
The compositions on this Cd are based on Indian ragas, the melodic structure used in classical Indian music, which are used to create specific moods in the listener. And indeed these songs create the moods of mystery, introspection and peace. Al Gromer Khan is known for his fusion of ambient electronica with his expert playing of the Indian Sitar, and in these compositions he has also combined the instruments of tabla, guitar and various hand drums.

Creative Core and Upper Body with Shiva Rea
Practicing 108 pushups in this tough and challenging yoga program sounds intimidating (and a little crazy), but it is surprisingly quite doable due to the modifications, relaxed do-what-you-can attitude, and the calming, soothing, and encouraging voice of master instructor Shiva Rea. The first segment of this program is the hardest, the Agni Namaskar (fire salutation) that includes the 108 pushups. The pushups are broken up into 9 sets of 12, making them much more manageable, especially with the sweet resting pose immediately following them.

Truth Love Creation by Reema Datta
Saturated in angelic vocal overlays and rich harmonies of ancient Sanskrit mantras, Reema Datta’s debut album is deeply calming, sonically mesmerizing and powerfully evocative of the sacred land of India. And while the vocals certainly take center stage in this recording, the musical backdrop of bansuri flute, cello, violin, piano, keyboards, tabla and sitar is magically interwoven to take the listener into even deeper states of reverie and bliss.

Yoga: Core Cross Train
This DVD has two excellent 30-minute yoga programs: a core strengthening sequence, and a core restorative sequence. While the title and box description infer that this DVD will be a tough workout and give you chiseled abs, in reality these two programs are both slow paced and set at a beginner’s level of challenge, intensity and complexity. With slow mindful movements and frequent cues to breathe, the core strengthening program is a balanced series of seated and standing poses that focus primarily, but not entirely, on the core muscles of the stomach and low back.

Heart Full of Soul by Krishna Das
On Krishna Das’s latest live 2-disk CD, he revisits many recorded favorites and includes a few new ones, including the lively gospel song “Jesus on the Mainline”. While this recording has a similar vibe to his first live CD, Live on Earth, it has more of a spacious feel to it, with more overall reverb and a larger sounding chorus. It is also interesting to compare the two recordings to see how Krishna Das has subtly changed over the 9 years between them.

Yoga: The Greater Tradition
There are so many books on yoga on the market now that at times a newcomer can feel like they are drowning in choices. Most of the books for beginners are extremely similar, defining yoga, pranayama, and asana in basic accessible, physical terms. But there are a few books that lead the beginner closer to a path of understanding of the vast scope of yoga and all that it encompasses. The new book Yoga: The Greater Tradition does just that. One of the present day authorities in the classical traditions of Yoga, Tantra and Ayurveda, David Frawley, offers a beginners book of Yoga that spans the philosophical and traditional aspects of the practice without feeling overwhelming or archaic.

Yoga for Computer Users
I know from firsthand experience the tolls that working on a computer for extended hours can take on the body. This book addresses these stresses and strains of the hands, shoulders and neck through yoga exercises and stretches, practiced at your desk or on your yoga mat. With only 23 illustrated poses this book is accessible and most importantly, not overwhelming to the average office worker. The poses themselves are simple and easy to do and include modifications with props for those with limited flexibility.
