The Kirtan Kit
This beautifully designed box set contains Two Cds of contemporary and traditional kirtan chants, a 28-page instruction booklet, and other tools for the devotional yogic practice of sanskrit chanting. While the booklet is a great beginner’s guide to the practice of kirtan, it still contains relevant and detailed information for the more experienced practitioner of chanting. This includes how to participate in kirtan (singing, dancing, using instruments), the history of kirtan, information on the mantras, and the words with translations of the songs on the enclosed Cds. The Cds contain a varieity of artists and styles of kirtan, from the popular Krishna Das, to the beautiful Karnamrita, and to other lesser known, yet talented artists. The kit also contains a pair of kartals (Indian hand symbols) to play along with the chants, and beautifully illustrated song cards to use while singing along with the Cds. Overall, this is a well put together package, that would be a treasure to have for both the begining and intermediate chanting practitioner.

Creative Core Abs
Shiva Rea’s latest video explores strengthening the physical and energetic core of the body through breath, asana and dance-like movement. This 37-minute program is broken down into 3 main sections: Water Core, Spontaneous Core and Fire Core. In the first segment, Water Core, Shiva explores the muscles in the pelvis, hips and waist through fluid circling movements in a seated position. In Spontaneous Core, the intensity level builds with variations on abdominal crunches with twists and leg lifts, and this segment ends with a spontaneous flow of movements to be chosen by the participant. In Fire Core, Shiva starts with Breath of fire and lion breath, and proceeds with an integration of more intermediate movements and standing postures. This is a beautifully filmed and produced DVD and is a great way to strengthen the core of the body in a fun, creative and engaging way.

Contact: The Yoga of Relationship
While there are several partner yoga books in print, none of them come as close to capturing the spirit and communicating the essence of this practice as Contact: The Yoga of Relationship. This beautiful coffee table sized book is filled with huge black and white photos, many of famous yoga teachers, taken in a candid, naturally expressive style. In the first part, general practice guidelines are given and the structure of the second section is described through the primary qualities of the chakra system: trust, passion, commitment, love, communication, vision and union. These seven “points of contact” are each given a chapter in the second section, with guidelines for incorporating each concept, as well as partner poses and exercises that develop these qualities. Short inspirational quotes are sprinkled throughout the pages that further highlight the concepts and ideas presented. And while there are step-by-step instructions for many of the poses, this work serves more as an inspiration, expression and statement of the joy, beauty and depth of partner yoga rather than a how-to guide.

The Language Of Yoga
If you have ever struggled with the pronunciation of the Sanskrit names and terms used in yoga, then this book and 2-cd set is for you. With the pronunciation of more than 200 yoga postures along with 300 key Sanskrit terms, the Language Of Yoga is a comprehensive and exceptional audio yoga dictionary. The 139-page spiral-bound book provides a text reference to the audio pronunciations with illustrations and definitions of the postures and terms. The program begins with seven common Sanskrit chants and seven primary sutras of Patanjali, and then moves on to a detailed list of Sanskrit words used in yoga. The second half of this program provides an alphabetical A-Y list of hundreds of yoga postures. Sanskrit teacher Nicolai Bachman pronounces the Sanskrit terms on the cds slowly and clearly, syllable by syllable, pronouncing each name twice with a space for you to practice repeating the word.

Asana: OHM Shanti
Ecstatic Indian vocals, groovy tabla beats, thumping bass and swirling electronica elements merge together in the fourth volume of the Asana series from Meta Records. This time, legendary bassist and producer Bill Laswell is featured on all nine tracks, utilizing his mastery of bringing musicians together from separate cultures and traditions to create inventive and spicy compositions. With most of these tracks having an upbeat tabla or electronica rhythm, OHM Shanti is best used as a motivation to move, flow and reverberate through a dynamic series of asanas. Or this Cd can simply be enjoyed as the soundtrack to the modern yogi’s daily life.

Moon on the Water
The shakuhachi bamboo flute is used primarily in Zen Buddhism in the practice of Suizen (blowing meditation). Using centuries old traditional compositions, Richardson plays the shakuhachi with beauty and precision, creating a tranquilizing and calming recording that is suitable for both meditation and yoga. This two CD set features solo shakuhachi on the first disk and shakuhachi with nature sounds recorded from Stan Richardson's travels on the second. The extensive liner notes document the history and origin of each composition with personal notes on the qualities, techniques and musical forms utilized.

Yoga Chants
Ashtanga yoga master Richard Freeman expounds the ancient art of Sanskrit chant in this exquisite two Cd set and booklet. The introductory tracks give the background and history on the practice of chanting, as well as explaining the structure and sacredness of the ancient language of Sanskrit. Guided instruction is provided on the practice tracks, including the symbolic meaning of the chant, its purpose, and step-by-step guidance on how to pronounce and recite the chant. Freedman truly shines in his detailed explanations of this practice, and especially with his eloquent and rich pronunciation of the chants. The second Cd contains ten traditional chants, rendered in the vedic style of patterned recitation, with a drone of harmonium or tambura in the background, that work well to practice reciting the chants with or to simply listen for their peaceful and tranquil effects.

Yogic Arts - Source Power
This follow-up to Duncan Wong’s first DVD uses the same high quality production and artistic filming to create a beautiful and stunning experience. Source Power is definitely an intermediate to advanced practice with its challenging, fast paced and complex sequences. Fortunately the most complex and intricate movements are repeated several times making them easier to follow and learn. The overall class format is very similar to Awakening Level, but this DVD goes much deeper through the almost doubling of its practice length (100 minutes) as well as its inclusion of more advanced and diverse yoga and martial arts moves. Even if this practice is a bit beyond your skill level, it can still serve as a motivation to further your practice as well as an inspiration for incorporating creative posture variations and unique transitions between poses.

Mega Yoga
This first-of-its-kind book is written and designed especially for plus-sized yoga students. Yoga poses, modifications, intensifications, and unique curvy women adaptations are given using multiple full color photos in a clear step-by-step format. Garcia stresses the benefits of yoga and uses a body positive approach of compassion, contentment and non-judgement throughout the book. And while she never emphasizes weight loss, she still offers the tools and techniques to empower one to achieve a strong body and a healthy lifestyle. The yoga pose chapters are divided according to the poses’ function and action, and are laid out in a intuitive sequence format. The end of the book contains three MegaYoga program sequences of 30, 60 and 90-minute illustrated posture flows, tying everything together. This well put together book is a very safe and un-intimidating approach to the practice of yoga for the beginning student, while still offering options to grow into a more intermediate practice.

Yoga Trance Dance
A radical departure from traditional hatha yoga, Yoga Trance Dance is a synergetic combination of flow yoga and free form dance. The DVD is comprised of 6 preprogrammed practices ranging from 29 to 41 minutes and contains 15 segments that can be mixed and matched through the innovative “Yoga Matrix” menu. The practices break down into three main techniques. Prana yoga incorporates spiraling, circling and twisting movements within traditional yoga postures. The calming and centering moving meditations are primarily arm movements with breath connecting with prana and shakti energies of the body. The free form dance segments are just that, uninhibited explorations of moving the body with minimal verbal guidance. The filming and production of the DVD is extraordinary, with the stunning White Sands National Park in the background and intriguing panning shots with an Indian classical dancer and an African drummer in the foreground. Overall, the Yoga Trance Dance DVD is a visual delight as well as an opportunity to explore, have fun and be truly expressive through yoga and dance.

Hip Tranquil Chick
This lighthearted, fun and inspiring book aims to guide women who wish to weave their “practice of yoga and love of all things fabulous into a hip and tranquil lifestyle.” Using wise tips, well thought out tools and personal engaging stories, Wilson provides this hip yogic advice with grace and beauty. The “On the Mat” section is fairly standard yoga book faire, with information on the path and practice of yoga, and includes basic yoga poses and sequences. The heart of the book lies in the “Off the Mat” section, which includes nine chapters that incorporate fundamental yogic concepts into daily life issues, such as career, finances, self-care, and relationships. Each chapter ends with “Savvy Sources,” a list of book, web and music resources, and “Om Work,” simple homework exercises to further explore the key concepts discussed. Overall, this is a great modern yogic lifestyle manual that will foster both personal growth and social consciousness.

Eternal Embrace
Baird Hersey & Prana combine the overtone techniques of Tibetan Buddhist multiphonic chanting and Tuvan throat singing with standard Western singing to create a mysterious and otherworldly sound. Using only the human voice, the Eternal Embrace is a meditative composition reflecting on Patanjali’s eight limbs of yoga. These slow, harmonic and soothing sounds draw the listener into a deep state of reflection and absorption and guide one towards Samadhi, complete oneness in bliss. Great for use in meditation and yoga, this CD is worth a listen just to hear the human voice creating sounds you never would have thought possible.

Yogic Arts - Awakening Level
Filmed in widescreen high-definition black and white with dramatic lighting through skylights and windows, this DVD takes the yoga video to new artistic heights. This 60-minute program is simply stunning to watch with its beautiful cinematography and Duncan Wong’s fluid, graceful and esoteric movements. Korean Buddhist Gung Fu, Ashtanga yoga, and Thai bodywork are combined to create a spicy and unique yoga practice with an extraordinary integration of pranayama, mudras and martial arts arm movements. This swift paced and complex sequence can be challenging to follow and thus not recommended for new beginners. Options enable the hour long video to be practiced in two shorter half hour segments.

Loveland: Music for Dreaming & Awakening
When I first listened to the instructional Cd Pranayama, I instantly longed to be able to just listen to the amazing soundtrack by Jai Uttal and Ben Leinbach. In Loveland, my wish has been more than granted as this soundtrack has been reinvented, remixed and edited to produce an amazingly peaceful and sweet hour-long voyage into spirit and inner peace. These beautiful and mystic chants by Jai and his wife Nubia float above a mystical, resonate and complex interweaving of ambient soundscapes. Jai and Ben play a wide array of instruments and are joined by the amazing bansuri flute playing of Manose, and the hypnotic tablas of Daniel Paul. Add Loveland to your collection of great Cds to use for yoga, massage and other healing arts.

A Day In The Light
This short documentary features the story and teachings of Indian Saint Pujya Swamiji. At eight years old he experienced enlightenment after his spiritual teacher sent him into the jungle to practice an arduous sadhana: an 11-hour meditation standing on one foot. Swamiji briefly tells of his experience alone in the jungle as the starting point to further discussions on obtaining eternal happiness, bliss and peace. This wise and gentle guru clearly speaks from his heart with grace and passion. His message is simple yet profound: open your heart, be present in this moment, let go of your attachments, and give to others. Overall this DVD provides an authentic Indian spiritual experience, full of vivid images of India and the Himalayan mountains, and accompanied by an exotic soundtrack of renowned musicians.

Yogic Wisdom
These days, my practice is teaching me to embrace imperfection: to have compassion for all the ways things haven’t turned out as I planned, in my body and in my life – for the ways things keep falling apart, and failing, and breaking down. It’s less about fixing things, and more about learning to be present for exactly what is.
Anne Cushman

Ahimsa, the yogic practice of non violence must be adhered to when engaging in the practice of hatha yoga. Respect your body's limitations and inner wisdom, if something feels wrong or dangerous, please do not do it.
Please consult your health care practitioner before starting a yoga, pranayama or other exercise program.
