Costa Rica Retreat FAQ

Do I need a passport?
Yes. Citizens of the US and Canada need a valid passport to travel in Costa Rica. Costa Rican law requires that your passport be valid for at least 30 days before the date you enter the country. You need to renew your passport prior to the trip, if this is the case. You are required to carry your passport with you at all times.
Do I need to exchange US dollars before I enter the country?
No. The Colones is the official currency but US dollars are widely accepted also. Major credit/debit cards are widely accepted in retail establishments. If you should want or need Colones, you can go to many local banks to exchange. If you purchase local items with US dollars expect to receive Colones back as your change. Do not bring traveler’s checks as they are very difficult to cash in Costa Rica.
Do I need special immunizations?
Vaccinations are not needed unless your traveling deep into humid regions (Southern Caribbean coastal areas) where the Indian reservations are located.
Is there an airport close to the retreat?
Travel to and from the Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Juan to Finca Luna Nueva is included in Retreat costs. We will schedule transport vans to pick you up at the International Airport in San Juan between 12pm – 6pm. The drive is approximately 3 hours. Departure vans will be scheduled to leave the retreat center between 5-11am and it is reccomended to arrive for your flight 3 hours before your departure (so plan to leave the retreat center 6 hours before your departure flight time).
Can I get a Taxi?
Official Airport Taxis are orange in color. Fares are paid at the airport taxi stand where you get a ticket to board a taxi. Larger 12 passenger taxi vans are available for groups or passengers with large amounts of luggage. US Dollars are widely accepted by taxis and always accepted by Airport Taxis.
Red is the standard color for taxis. Official taxis have a yellow triangle with their registration tag number on the door and a photo ID of the driver inside the cab, usually on the sun visor. Fares depend on whether the drivers use their meters, which are calibrated to the official tariffs for trips under 5 km. If your trip is more than 5 km long, you should request a quote before entering the taxi.
Do I need special plugs for the electrical outlets?
Electrical power is the same as in the U.S with 110V, 60Hz current and the same style wall outlets. Many outlets only have 2 slots w/o the 3rd ‘ground’ receptacle, so bringing along a 3-prong to 2-prong adapter can be useful.
Is there air conditioning?
Some rooms are air conditioned but the ambient temperature is such that the nights tend to be cool and days are comfortably warm.
What is the weather like?
The dry season starts late December, has very little rain, and ends late April, sometimes into May. Costa Rica’s “green or wet season” is the remainder of the year. Almost every day starts off nice and sunny, with showers in the afternoon. Average year-round temperature is 70 to 80 degrees.
Costa Rica has first light at 5:10 a.m. followed by sunrise at 5:30 a.m. Sunset is around 5:45 p.m. and it gets dark at about 6:00 p.m.
