Do I need to exchange US dollars before I enter the country?
No. The official currency is pesos but dollars or euros in traveler’s checks or cash are accepted. Change will be given in pesos, so bring small bills. Banks offer the best exchange rates, and changing currency at the airport is not recommended. There are three ATM machines in the town of Tulum (3.5 miles away) and one bank. Credit cards are accepted at Maya Tulum.
Where is Maya Tulum?
Maya Tulum is on the Atlantic coast of Mexico, about 90 minutes south of Cancun. It has none of Cancun’s highrise hotels, nightclubs, or commercialization. It is in a fairly pristine area a few miles from the town of Tulum and the breathtaking Tulum Mayan Ruins.
How do I get to the retreat?
It is best to fly directly into Cancun to by-pass Mexico City and avoid any delay in the larger airport’s customs area. From Cancun airport, a shuttle van from the resort can be arranged to pick you up for $80 round trip.
I’ve heard Mexico is a dangerous place. Is that true?
All countries have dangerous and unsafe places, but we are not traveling near any dangerous places in Mexico. Maya Tulum is an extremely safe and comfortable place to stay, and is located far away from any dangerous urban areas. You will be picked up from the Cancun airport and taken directly to the retreat center. For added security there are safes in each cabana.
Do I need a passport?
Yes. Passports are required for entering Mexico from the United States. US citizens do not need a special visa, but non-US citizens may require one. Please check your passport’s expiration date before you book your trip.
Do I need special plugs for the electrical outlets?
No. Electrical power is the same as in the U.S and has the same style wall outlets. A generator produces standard 110V electricity, but it will not sustain the wattage output of hair dryers, irons, etc. It will support battery chargers and laptops. However, if you are going to use this equipment it is highly recommended that you also bring a surge protector.
Do I need special immunizations?
No vaccinations are required to enter Mexico.
