The new album by Baird Hersey & Prana is a magical and mystical journey into sound, vibration, and sacred chant. Using only overtone singing, vocal harmonics and sparse percussion this choral group creates mesmerizing and trance inducing compositions. The twelve tracks on Sadhana explore the chanting and vocal traditions of India, Tibet, Tuva, Bulgaria and Georgia. Five of the twelve tracks incorporate Sanskrit mantras (including the Ashtanga Yoga invocation and closing mantras), the rest are instrumental. My favorite track is “The Mani Wheel,” which is more upbeat than the rest of the album and is one of the four tracks with percussion. The last track features Krishna Das singing “My Foolish Heart.”
